The first academic research center in the field of history in SSR of Moldova was established in 1946 with the founding of the Moldavian Base of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, into which there was included the Institute of History, Language and Literature. In 1958, this institute was divided into the Institute of History and the Institute of Language and Literature, and from 1961 Institute of History operates within the Academy of Sciences of Moldova
The Government decision of 14 December 2005 decided merging of the Institute of History with the Department of State and Law of the Institute of Philosophy, Sociology and Law, and the formation of the Institute of History, State and Law. As a result, in 2006 within the Institute of History, State and Law of the ASM there was created the Center for Historical Studies.
In accordance with Government Decision No. 326 of 18 April 2013 on the reorganization of science and innovation organizations and the decision of ASM No. 99 of 25 April 2013, Institute of History, State and Law is reorganized into Institute of History by: 1. Transmission of State and Law Center to the Institute for Legal and Political Research 2. Taking over the Sector of Philosophy from the former Institute of European Integration and Political Sciences of the ASM.

Ţaranu (1991-1992), acad. A. Eşanu (1992-1994), c.m. D. Dragnev (1994-2006), Dr. hab. A. Burian (2006), Dr. Ion Jarcuţchii, Dr. Sergiu Musteaţă, Dr. Gheorghe Cojocaru.
